A Motorized Gate That Works Every Cycle, Every Season in LA
Wiring, permits, and programming handled from first assessment to final test.
What Automatic Gate Installation Actually Covers
Automatic gate installation is more than mounting a motor. It's a full mechanical and electrical system.
Every automatic gate install involves four distinct layers: the gate structure itself, the gate operator (the motorized unit that drives the gate open and closed), the trench wiring that delivers power underground from your electrical panel to the operator, and the access control system tied to that operator. All four have to be sized and sequenced correctly.
Iron Men Gates and Doors Design handles every layer in-house. We've been doing this in Los Angeles since 2014, and we hold active California Contractor License #1049550.
Why Los Angeles Driveways Require Specific Planning
Los Angeles properties are not flat, not uniform, and rarely standard, and that shapes every install decision.
LA driveways come in a wide range of configurations. Properties in the Hollywood Hills or Silver Lake often have sloped entries with grade changes of 10 to 20 degrees. Culver City lots tend to run narrow with limited approach clearance. Mid-city properties on the grid may have shallow setbacks that affect gate swing arc.
Here's what most homeowners don't realize about automatic gates on sloped driveways: a swing gate installed on an incline needs a specific arm geometry to clear the grade without dragging. A sliding gate on the same lot needs a longer track run, sometimes 1.5 to 2 times the gate width, to allow full travel on the slope.
Our Wilshire Boulevard dispatch location puts crews directly accessible across the LA basin. We know these neighborhoods. We've worked these lots. That site-specific knowledge changes how we plan every install before a single tool leaves the truck.

How One Hillside Install Came Together
Every automatic gate job teaches you something. Here's one that taught me why motor sizing is non-negotiable.
I got a call from a homeowner in Laurel Canyon. They had a wide dual swing configuration, two panels, each over eight feet, fabricated from ornamental iron. A dual swing configuration is a two-gate setup where both panels open outward from a center point. It's common on wider driveways, but it doubles the mechanical load on the operators.
The previous installer had spec'd operators based on the gate dimensions, not the measured weight. The panels came in at over 400 pounds combined. The operators installed were rated for roughly half that load at the expected daily cycle count.
We assessed the site before ordering anything. I had both panels weighed using a portable load scale, something I bring on every iron gate job. Motor sizing, the process of matching an operator's torque and cycle rating to a gate's actual weight and daily use, is where most installs either hold up or fall apart. We swapped in commercial-grade swing-arm operators rated for the actual load, re-ran the trench wiring, the underground conduit from the power source to the operator, and the system has run clean through two seasons since.
Heavy ornamental iron gates are common in Los Angeles. They need operators matched to the real numbers, not a catalog estimate.
Permits and Power Supply, Handled Upfront
Most Los Angeles automatic gate installs require a permit, and we build that into the project from day one.
County Permit
An LA County permit covers the electrical work tied to any hardwired gate operator. The permit process is something we manage. Homeowners don't need to navigate the county building department on their own.
Power Supply
Single-phase power supply, standard residential electrical service running at 120V or 240V, powers most residential gate operators. If your panel doesn't have available capacity near the gate location, we assess that during the site visit, not after the install has started.
Entrapment Protection
Entrapment protection refers to safety mechanisms, photo eyes, edge sensors, loop detectors, required by UL 325 to prevent a gate from closing on a person or vehicle. We don't treat these as optional add-ons. They're part of every build.
Our Standards on Every Automatic Gate Install
Iron Men holds every install to the same set of non-negotiable standards, regardless of gate size or property type.
- Gate operator selected after the gate panels are weighed, never estimated from dimensions alone.
- Trench wiring run in rigid conduit, not flex, rated for direct burial and LA soil conditions.
- All entrapment protection devices tested before the homeowner takes operation of the gate.
- Programming confirmed for travel limits, auto-close timing, and obstacle reversal sensitivity.
- Access control integration, keypads, remotes, intercoms, tested under full load, not bench-tested separately.
- Dual swing configurations calibrated for panel timing so both leaves arrive at the stop point simultaneously.
Three coats. Not two. That's how we think about every step in this process. The standard matters more than the shortcut.
Installation Execution: Phase by Phase
The install follows a fixed sequence so nothing gets skipped and every system is tested in order.
Phase 1, Site Diagnostics and Motor Selection
We start with a physical site assessment. Gate panels are measured and weighed. The driveway grade is checked. Available power supply is confirmed at the panel. Based on those numbers, the gate operator is selected, swing-arm, linear, or underground, depending on clearance and configuration. This is where motor sizing happens: torque rating, duty cycle, and cycle volume are all matched to the actual gate before hardware is ordered.
Phase 2, Trench Wiring and Power Routing
Conduit is trenched from the power source to the operator location. Depth and routing follow LA County electrical standards. All conduit joints are sealed for moisture, which matters on properties near the coast or in hillside zones with irrigation runoff.
Phase 3, Gate Mounting and Operator Installation
The operator is mounted to the post or column at the correct height and angle for the gate geometry. On swing gates, arm geometry is set to match the driveway grade. On sliding gates, the track is leveled and the drive gear aligned to the gate's bottom rail.
Phase 4, Programming and Safety Testing
Travel limits are programmed. Obstacle reversal sensitivity is set. Every entrapment protection device, photo eyes, edge sensors, loop detectors, is triggered and tested individually. The homeowner walks through the full operation cycle before we close out the job.
