What Custom Fence Design in Los Angeles Actually Means

Custom fence design means building a fence around your property, not around a catalog.

Standard fence panels come in fixed heights and fixed widths. Most are manufactured at six- or eight-foot spans. When a property line curves, a grade drops mid-run, or a corner doesn't land on a standard post interval, a stock panel system won't fit cleanly.

Custom fence design in Los Angeles starts differently. We measure the site first. Every elevation change, every boundary angle, every wall intersection gets recorded before a single line is drawn. The fence is then designed to match the property as it actually exists.

What a stock panel system won't fit cleanly

  • A property line that curves
  • A grade that drops mid-run
  • A corner that doesn't land on a standard post interval
Measured on-site firstCustom design

What gets recorded before a line is drawn

  • Every elevation change
  • Every boundary angle
  • Every wall intersection

That's what a custom fabricated fence means in practice. Not a slightly modified stock panel. A fence built to your lot's exact geometry.

Local Conditions

Why Los Angeles Properties Need a Different Approach

Properties along the 10 and 405 freeway corridors, from Culver City through West LA and into the Valley, reflect over a century of subdivision, re-subdivision, and infill development. Lot lines follow old ranch boundaries, creek beds, and utility easements. Few of them are square.

Hillside and mid-city lotsGrade

Resolved in the design phase

Here's what many hillside and mid-city lot owners discover: even a modest grade change of eight to twelve inches across a forty-foot fence run creates a visible alignment problem with raked or stepped panels. Grade transition, the change in ground elevation along a fence line, has to be resolved in the design phase. It cannot be corrected during installation.

HOA-governed propertiesHOA

Approval comes before fabrication

A designer fence installer that Los Angeles homeowners work with needs to understand HOA design submission requirements, the documentation package a homeowners association requires for design approval, before fabrication begins.

Iron Men has handled both: sloped lots and HOA approval paths. Since 2014, that process has been built into every custom project.

How a Real Custom Fence Project Unfolds

Every custom job starts the same way: measuring what's actually there.

Yaron Eliya, Owner, Iron Men Gates and Doors Design

One project I remember clearly was a corner property in the Westwood area. The homeowner wanted a continuous wrought-iron style fence along two street-facing sides of the lot. On paper, it sounded simple. On site, it was anything but.

The front property line ran forty-three feet. The grade dropped just over fourteen inches from the driveway end to the corner post location. The neighboring wall on the side street was stucco block, sitting at a height that didn't match any standard iron panel dimension.

The corner itself wasn't a ninety-degree turn. It was eighty-seven degrees. Three degrees doesn't sound like much. Run a straight-panel system through it and you'll see every one of those degrees in the gap it creates.

What the survey recorded

We completed a full site survey before drawing anything. We recorded every grade point, measured the stucco wall height, and noted the corner angle.

Panel configurationRaked

What we designed

From those measurements, we built a panel configuration, the arrangement of pickets, rails, and infill within each fence section, that accounted for the slope with raked sections on the front run and a custom corner post fabricated to the actual angle.

Material selection consultationSteel

Powder-coated steel rather than aluminum

Material selection consultation, matching material to climate exposure and aesthetic preference, pointed us toward powder-coated steel rather than aluminum. This neighborhood has older masonry homes with heavier architectural lines. Aluminum would have looked thin next to them.

Design approval to delivery12 working days

Then two days to install

Fabrication lead time on that job was twelve working days from design approval to delivery. Installation took two days.

The fence fit the corner exactly. That's what bespoke fence design is supposed to produce.

HOA and Permits

HOA Submissions and Permit Documentation

HOA and permit documentation is part of the design process, not an afterthought.

When a property falls under an HOA, custom metal fence design work in LA requires a formal HOA design submission before fabrication starts. That package typically includes dimensioned drawings, material specifications, and finish samples.

Fence permits

California contractor license #1049550 also covers the permit side. When a jurisdiction requires a fence permit (and in many parts of Los Angeles, fences over six feet do), we handle the documentation.

We build submission-ready documentation into the project timeline. We know what the standard submission package looks like and we prepare it as part of the design phase.

Our Standards

Our Standards for Custom Fence Fabrication

Every made-to-order fence design project in Los Angeles follows the same documented standards.

Site survey before design

Property geometry drives the design. No assumptions.

Grade-accurate panel configuration

Raked or stepped panel options based on elevation data, not installer preference.

Material matched to site conditions

Wrought iron, powder-coated steel, aluminum, wood species, or composite, selected after reviewing climate exposure, HOA requirements, and architectural context.

HOA-ready documentation

Drawings and specifications formatted for submission to your association.

Fabrication lead time confirmed in writing

Schedule communicated before deposit is collected.

Installation by the fabricating team

The crew that builds the panels installs them. No handoffs to unrelated subcontractors.

The Process

Our Execution Protocol: From Survey to Installed Fence

Custom fabrication follows a fixed sequence. Every step builds on the one before it.

Site survey and design brief

We begin with an on-site visit. A site survey captures the fence line, grade elevation changes, existing wall heights, and architectural reference points. At the same time, we collect the design brief: material preferences, privacy requirements, decorative element preferences, HOA constraints.

From that data, we produce a dimensioned design drawing. This is not a sketch. It's a measured document showing post locations, panel heights, rail configurations, and material callouts. Revisions happen here, before fabrication starts.

Fabrication and material preparation

Once the design is approved, fabrication begins. Panel configuration is built to the site survey dimensions. Posts are cut to grade-accurate lengths. For metal fences, welding and powder coating happen before delivery. For wood projects, species selection and treatment are completed at this stage.

Fabrication lead time is confirmed in the design approval document. You know the schedule before production starts.

Fit check and finish inspection

After installation, every section is checked for alignment against the original survey data. Post plumb is verified. Panel spacing is measured at top and bottom rail to confirm it matches the approved configuration.

Gates, if included, are cycle-tested. Finish is inspected for gaps, bare spots, or surface irregularities before the project is signed off.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Custom fence fabrication costs more upfront than stock panels. Standard panel systems run lower per linear foot because they're manufactured in volume. A site-surveyed, custom-built fence accounts for grade changes, non-standard angles, and material selection, work that pre-built panels skip entirely. Pricing depends on material, linear footage, and design complexity. Call 844-997-7555 for a site-specific quote after we measure your property.

Measuring your property takes roughly one to two hours on-site. We record grade elevation changes, boundary angles, wall heights, and corner geometry. From those measurements, we produce a dimensioned drawing, not a sketch. That drawing goes to you for review before fabrication starts. Plan for design review within a few days of the survey visit, then fabrication begins after your written approval.

Yes. Curved lot lines are exactly what custom fabrication is designed to handle. Stock panels cannot flex along a curve without creating visible gaps or misaligned pickets. We design each section to the measured boundary position. Curved runs are resolved in the design drawing before any material is cut or welded.

Fabrication lead time is the days between your design approval and when fence components are ready for installation. For metal fences, welding and powder coating happen during this window. Lead time varies by material and project complexity. We confirm the exact number in writing before you approve the design, so your schedule is set before production starts, not after.

Catalog-based "custom" means choosing from preset height and style options. Our process starts with a site survey. Property geometry drives the design. Panel configuration, post lengths, grade transitions, and corner angles are all derived from on-site measurements. The fence is built to your lot's actual dimensions, not adjusted to fit the nearest standard size.

We handle the HOA design submission package as part of the design phase. That package includes dimensioned drawings, material specifications, and finish samples (what most Los Angeles associations require for approval). Submission documentation is built into the project timeline. Fabrication does not begin until HOA approval is confirmed, so no materials are ordered before you have clearance.
