Custom Gates Designed and Built to Your Property's Exact Opening
Custom gate design and installation in Los Angeles means your gate is built to your property's actual dimensions, not adjusted after the fact.
Los Angeles properties don't share a standard footprint. A Spanish Revival in Los Feliz has a different entry profile than a mid-century modern in Silver Lake. A Mediterranean estate in Calabasas has different wall heights, pillar widths, and sight-line requirements than a contemporary home in Brentwood.
Iron Men Gates and Doors Design handles custom gate fabrication, the process of building a gate to non-standard dimensions and design specifications, as opposed to selecting from pre-manufactured sizes. You get a gate built from measurements taken at your opening, in a pattern and finish selected with you before fabrication begins.
Wrought Iron, Tubular Steel or Aluminum
Material choice drives the largest cost variable on a custom gate, and it also decides how well the gate automates and how it ages. Here is the trade-off in plain terms.
| Factor | Wrought Iron | Tubular Steel | Aluminum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best suited to | Ornamental scroll work and decorative detail | Clean linear designs and automated openers | Coastal and high-humidity properties |
| Weight | Heaviest. Dense material at comparable span | Lighter than wrought iron for the same gate | Lightest of the three |
| Automation fit | Needs a higher operator torque rating | Integrates most cleanly with automatic openers | Low panel weight, easy on the operator |
| Corrosion resistance | Requires anti-rust treatment before finish | Requires anti-rust treatment before finish | Naturally rust-resistant. Will not rust |
| Ornamental detail | Holds detail best of the three | Suits linear and geometric patterns | Suits linear and geometric patterns |
| Relative cost | Highest of the three | Lower than wrought iron | Lower than wrought iron |
| Finish | Powder coat is standard on all three: applied electrostatically, cured under heat, harder and more durable than liquid paint. Colour matched to your property's existing palette. | ||
Los Angeles Architecture Requires a Different Approach
LA's architectural range means most catalog gates are a poor fit for this city's properties.
Laurel Canyon
Hillside homes often have sloped driveways that require a gate with a raked bottom rail, something no stock panel accounts for.
Brentwood
Estate driveways can run 16 to 24 feet wide, well beyond what a standard swing gate can cover without custom engineering for the pivot point and counterweight.
Decorative pillars
Pillar width often eats into the usable span by four to eight inches per side. If that's not measured before fabrication, the gate either binds or leaves a visible gap.
Iron Men performs every consultation at the actual site. Our team travels across Los Angeles, from hillside entries to flat lot driveways, so measurements come from the real opening, not a phone estimate.
How the Design-to-Installation Process Works
Iron Men's custom gate process moves in a documented sequence, no steps skipped.
On-Site Consultation and Measurements
We come to your property. We measure the clear opening, the pillar dimensions, the approach grade, and any existing hardware that might affect the installation. We discuss your architectural style, your automation needs, and your HOA requirements if applicable. Material options, wrought iron, tubular steel, aluminum, are presented with plain-language trade-offs.
Design, Drawing, and Approval
A scaled drawing is produced based on your measurements and selections. You review it. Changes are made before fabrication starts. If you need HOA submission support, we prepare the documentation in the format your architectural committee requires. Nothing goes to the shop until you sign off.
Fabrication and Finish
Your gate is fabricated to the approved drawing. Metalwork, scroll patterns, and structural hardware are assembled in our shop. Powder coat or chosen finish is applied and cured. Gate sizing and structural load calculations are verified against the final fabricated weight before delivery.
Field Installation and Post-Service Testing
Our team installs the gate at your property. Hinges, posts, and operator hardware are set to the actual opening conditions, including any grade adjustment for sloped driveways. If an automatic opener is part of the project, we test full-cycle operation, safety sensor function, and access control integration before we leave the site.
Questions About Lead Times? Here's How We Handle That
Custom fabrication has a timeline, and we tell you what it is before you commit.
One of the most common questions I get is how long a custom gate takes from first call to installed hardware. The honest answer is it depends on design complexity, material, and finish. A straightforward single-swing tubular steel gate with a powder coat finish, a dry coating applied electrostatically and cured under heat that provides a harder surface than liquid paint, moves faster than a double-swing wrought iron gate with ornamental scrollwork.
What doesn't change is our process: the design-to-fabrication workflow is sequential. Each step completes before the next begins. We give you a documented timeline after the consultation. No vague estimates. No surprise delays from an opening that wasn't measured correctly upfront.

Every custom gate project I take on starts the same way: I show up, measure, and listen.
Yaron Eliya, Owner, Iron Men Gates and Doors Design
I remember a project in Silver Lake, a Craftsman-style home with a wide driveway entry, existing concrete pillars, and an HOA that required design drawings before approval. The homeowner had already received a stock iron gate that didn't fit the span, and the HOA rejected the submission because it had no documented specifications.
When I got to the site, I measured the clear opening, checked the pillar face for mounting depth, and walked the homeowner through material options on the spot. For that project, we chose tubular steel, lighter and easier to automate, over solid wrought iron. Wrought iron is denser and holds decorative detail better for ornamental scroll work, but this homeowner wanted a cleaner, linear design with an automatic opener. Tubular steel was the right call structurally and aesthetically.
We produced a scaled drawing within a week. The HOA approved it. Gate sizing and structural load, the relationship between a gate's physical dimensions, its weight, and the hardware required to support it safely, drove every decision about hinge selection and post anchoring. The final gate matched the home's horizontal siding lines. The opener integrated cleanly. That homeowner didn't have to touch it again.
Gate pattern and scroll design, the decorative metalwork elements like scrolls, finials, and picket spacing that give a custom gate its visual identity, were part of the conversation from day one. Not an afterthought. That's the only way a custom gate actually looks custom when it's done.
HOA submission support is something we include when a project requires it. We prepare the design drawings and specifications in a format most HOA architectural committees expect. That step alone has saved our clients weeks of back-and-forth.

Our Standards for Custom Gate Work
Every custom gate Iron Men builds meets a defined material and finish standard before it leaves the shop.
Material selection
Wrought iron holds ornamental detail best. Tubular steel is lighter and ideal for automated gates. Aluminum resists rust naturally and suits coastal or high-humidity zones in Southern California.
Powder coat finish
Standard on all metal gates. Applied electrostatically, cured under heat. Harder and more durable than liquid paint. We match colour to your property's existing palette.
Structural load engineering
Gate sizing accounts for hinge load, operator torque, and long-term cycle wear. Heavier gates get heavier hardware. Always.
Scroll and pattern work
Decorative elements are proportioned to the gate's overall dimensions. A 14-foot gate gets different scroll scaling than a 6-foot pedestrian entry.
Anti-rust treatment
All bare metal surfaces are treated before powder coat is applied. California's coastal air accelerates oxidation on untreated iron.
