Fence Panel Replacement: Replace Only What's Structurally Done
Section-by-section replacement means you pay for the work that's actually needed, nothing more.
This is the right move when your posts are still structurally sound, a portion of your panels have warped or split, and the fence line doesn't need a full rebuild. New panels go onto existing posts. The rest of the fence stays in place.
We handle it with one non-negotiable step first: post integrity confirmed before the panel order is placed. That single step is what keeps new panels from failing early on old, moisture-damaged posts.

Panel replacement
Panels that have aged out: warped, split, or grayed from years of sun and moisture. Planned work, often with HOA material matching.
Broken / damaged panel repair
A panel that took a hit: storm debris, a branch, a vehicle. Sudden impact damage rather than gradual weathering.

Differential weathering, uneven aging across a single fence run, is the defining fence challenge in this city.
It happens when one section takes more UV exposure, irrigation contact, or shade than the section beside it. In Los Angeles, this is almost guaranteed. The same run can bake at one end and stay damp at the other.

A 300-day sun calendar
South-facing panels bake. This end warps and grays first, often years ahead of anything else on the line.
Damp at the base rail for months
Tree canopy and sprinkler contact keep this end wet. Common in the Valley and in South Bay marine layer.
Replacing panels without accounting for this sets the new panels up for early failure. Specifically: without checking whether the posts at the damaged section absorbed that same moisture.
What Yaron Saw on a Pico-Robertson Replacement Job
The post looked fine from the street. It wasn't.
A client wanted three panels replaced on their side yard. Standard 6-foot dog-ear panels, sections facing west. Classic LA sun damage: warping on two sections, one split rail, one section still in decent shape. Before I touched a panel, I ran a post plumb check. Two of the three posts were plumb. The center post wasn't.
Of lean at the top of the center post. Nothing obvious from the sidewalk. I dug around the base: the concrete collar had cracked along one side, and the post had absorbed moisture through that crack for at least two seasons. The wood at grade level had softened.
What would have happened
- The new panel pulls out of plumb within a year
- The panel above it starts to gap at the rails
- Rain and irrigation get behind the new boards
- Exactly the way they got behind the old ones
The client would have paid for panels that looked new and failed on the same schedule as the last set.
Post first, then panels
- Replaced the compromised post
- Reset the concrete collar
- Let it cure 48 hours
- Then installed the three new panels
Three panels, one post replacement, one concrete reset. A fence section built to last, not just panels that looked new.
HOA Fence Requirements in LA Don't Have to Slow the Project Down
Panel grade matching and HOA compliance are handled before the job starts, not discovered on installation day.
Many HOA communities in Los Angeles specify approved materials, surface textures, board profiles, and stain or paint finishes. A smooth-face cedar panel can't be swapped for a rough-sawn one just because the lumber yard was short on stock.
Panel grade matching, selecting replacement lumber that matches the existing fence's profile, thickness, and surface texture, is part of our intake process. We ask about HOA requirements upfront, and if documentation is needed we work with what you have.
Compliance issues get resolved before the panel order is placed. Not the morning of the job.

Our Standards for Fence Panel Replacement Work
Every replacement panel is matched, plumb-verified, and weather-sealed before we leave the site.
- Post plumb check at every replacement point. No new panels go onto a post that doesn't hold vertical.
- Concrete collar assessment. Cracked or heaved collars are documented and addressed before panel installation.
- Panel grade matching. Profile, thickness, and surface texture matched to existing stock as closely as available material allows.
- HOA-compliant material selection, flagged and confirmed before ordering.
- Section-by-section sequencing, so the fence line stays functional throughout the job.
- Weather seal on cut edges. Exposed lumber ends sealed before fastening, not after.
- California contractor license #1049550, covering all panel replacement work performed in Los Angeles.
How the Replacement Process Works
Diagnostics, material confirmation, then installation and a joint plumb check.
On-site panel and post diagnostics
We walk the affected sections. Every post connected to a panel being replaced gets a plumb check and a base inspection, looking at post lean, base condition, and concrete collar integrity: cracking, heaving, or moisture intrusion below grade.
Panels are assessed for warping beyond 2 inches of deflection, split rails, and fastener pull-through. Posts that cannot support a new panel to true vertical are flagged before we proceed.
Material selection and HOA confirmation
Once post condition is confirmed, we match replacement material to the existing fence. Board profile, thickness, and surface texture are matched to available stock. If your property falls under HOA requirements, common in gated communities across the Westside and Valley, material selection gets confirmed against those specs before ordering.
Installation and post-install verification
Old panels come off. Posts that passed inspection get new panels fastened to existing rail positions. Posts that needed replacement are reset with new concrete collars, cured, then paneled. Cut edges are weather-sealed before fastening.
Each replaced section gets a final plumb check with post and panel alignment verified together, not separately. Rails are checked for square, and the fence line is walked end-to-end before the job is closed.
