What It Covers

Gate Welding Is Structural Work, Not Surface Repair

When a weld joint fails, the frame loses the connection holding it together.

You might see a crack running along a corner, a hinge plate pulling away from the frame tube, or a panel border separating at the seam. The gate may still move, but it's moving on a compromised structure. That's different from a cosmetic scratch or a paint chip.

We re-weld cracked frame joints, re-attach hinge plates, repair stress fractures at panel connections, and fabricate replacement sections when a section is beyond repair.

Owner's Perspective

What I See at a Failed Gate Weld, and Why It Matters

When I get to a cracked gate frame, I'm reading the failure pattern, not just documenting the damage.

A crack running along the weld toe at a corner joint tells me something different than a hinge plate that's pulled cleanly away from the frame tube. Two symptoms, two root causes, two different repairs.

Pattern 01

Crack along the weld toe at a corner joint

What it means

Fatigue. The weld was sound when it was made, but the joint accumulated stress over years of operation until the weld toe gave out.

What it needs

A re-weld with proper prep and correct electrode selection. The base metal is still doing its job.

Pattern 02

Hinge plate pulled away from the frame tube

What it means

Depends on what actually failed. Did the plate pull the weld, or did the base metal tear? Those are not the same problem.

What it needs

If the weld pulled, a re-weld. If the base metal tore, the frame tube may be too thin for the load it's carrying.

When the base metal is the problem:

We reinforce the hinge zone first, adding a backing plate or gusset, before laying a new weld on it. Reinforcement gets fabricated and fitted before welding, not after.

Re-welding into weakened base metal without addressing the root cause will fail again. That's the whole reason the diagnosis comes before the equipment does.

Method Selection

MIG or TIG, Chosen at the Joint

I don't apply one method to everything. That's not how you get a weld that holds and looks right.

MIG · GMAW

Gas Metal Arc Welding

Continuously fed wire electrode with shielding gas.

Use it on

Heavier steel frame, say 1/4-inch wall tube. Structural members carrying real load.

Why

It delivers the penetration depth and weld speed structural steel needs.

TIG · GTAW

Gas Tungsten Arc Welding

Non-consumable tungsten electrode.

Use it on

Thinner decorative iron pickets, and finish-critical visible joints.

Why

It gives spatter control and bead appearance that MIG can't match on thin material.

Applying one method to all gate repairs produces welds that are either over-penetrated or undersized. Our field setup runs both processes on site, so the method is selected at the gate based on what the joint requires, not on what equipment is easier to transport.

The LA Factor

LA Gates Carry a Load Most People Don't Account For

High-use gates here accumulate thousands of cycles per year at every joint.

5,000–9,000Cycles per year

A driveway gate off a narrow Mid-City alley may open and close 15 to 25 times a day. Every cycle places load on the frame weld joint at corners, hinge mounting points, and panel borders. Over time that repeated stress causes micro-fractures at the weld toe.

There's an environmental factor here too. The coastal marine layer moving inland from Santa Monica Bay carries salt-laden moisture. That moisture sits on exposed steel welds, particularly at horizontal frame joints where water pools, and begins corrosion at the point where the metal is most structurally loaded.

Wilshire corridor properties, Culver City homes near the coast, and West Hollywood gates with limited sun exposure are all vulnerable to that pattern. We dispatch from our Wilshire Boulevard location, which gives us fast access to the mid-city corridor, Culver City, and West Hollywood without extended lead times across the basin.

A tight macro of corrosion at a weld joint visually supports the section's argument that LA gates endure hidden structur
Where the Work Happens

Field Welding and Shop Welding

The decision is made on what the repair requires, not what's easier to transport.

On site

Field welding

Performed at the installation site. This is how we handle cracked hinge welds, frame corner fractures, and broken panel connections on gates that are still mounted and operational. Our field setup runs both MIG and TIG.

Off site

Shop welding

The gate comes off its hinges or track, the damaged section is rebuilt on a welding table, and the finished piece goes back out. That's the right call for extensive fabrication, replacement panel sections, full frame rebuilds, and custom ornamental work.

Our standards on every weld

  • Weld method selection. MIG or TIG chosen by material thickness and joint visibility, never applied uniformly.
  • Joint preparation. Old weld material, rust, and contamination cleaned before new weld is deposited.
  • Weld inspection. Visual and tactile review for porosity, undercut, incomplete fusion, and cracking on every joint before any coating is applied.
  • Spatter finishing. Weld spatter removed, bead ground or blended to match the surrounding material profile.
  • Structural weld load test. Every repaired joint tested under operational load before job closeout.
  • California Contractor License #1049550. All welding work performed under our licensed contractor status.
The Process

Our Gate Welding Process

Read the joint, execute the weld, verify it holds.

1

How we read the joint before welding

We start with a full assessment before any equipment comes out, identifying whether the failure is weld fatigue, base metal failure, or joint design, because each calls for a different repair approach. We check hinge mounting points, frame corners, panel border seams, and any area where the gate connects to automation hardware. If the joint shows corrosion in addition to cracking, we document both and address both in the repair plan.

2

How we execute the weld

Once the failure mode is confirmed, we prep the joint: removing contaminated or corroded weld material, cleaning the base metal, and selecting the correct process. On repairs requiring reinforcement, a gusset, a backing plate, a sleeve, we fabricate and fit those components before welding, not after. Spatter finishing follows every completed weld so the joint blends with the surrounding material.

3

How we verify the repair holds

Before we pack the equipment, the repaired gate goes through a structural weld load test. We apply operational load, swing force, gate weight, motor torque on automated gates, and confirm the weld holds. We also run a weld inspection of the finished joint, checking for porosity, undercut, or surface cracking that appeared during cooling.

If anything doesn't pass, it gets addressed on the spot. We don't schedule a follow-up to fix a weld we just laid.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Gate weld repair costs vary based on joint complexity, material thickness, and whether field or shop work is needed. A single cracked frame corner costs less than a full hinge zone reinforcement with a backing plate. Contact Iron Men Gates and Doors Design at 844-997-7555 for an on-site assessment and accurate quote.

Visible cracking at a frame corner, a hinge plate pulling away from the frame tube, or a gate shifting under its own weight all point to weld joint failure. Surface rust or paint damage alone does not indicate a structural weld problem. Iron Men reads the failure pattern first, fatigue crack versus base metal failure, before recommending any repair approach.

Yes. Our field welding setup runs both MIG and TIG processes on-site, so cracked hinge welds, frame corner fractures, and broken panel connections can be repaired while the gate stays mounted and operational. Shop work applies to full frame rebuilds or large fabrication sections where a welding table is necessary. The decision is made based on what the repair requires, not what is easier to transport.

Yes, the method matters significantly for weld quality. MIG welding delivers deeper penetration on heavier structural steel frames. TIG welding gives tighter bead control on thin decorative iron or finish-visible joints. Applying one method to all gate repairs produces welds that are either over-penetrated or undersized. Iron Men selects the process at the joint based on material thickness and visibility requirements.

After a weld is complete, we subject the repaired joint to operational load, gate weight, swing force, or motor torque on automated gates, to confirm the weld holds under real conditions before we close the job. A weld can look clean at rest and still fail when the gate cycles. This step confirms the joint holds under actual conditions, not just visual inspection, and it is a non-negotiable part of every completed job.

Sometimes, but not always. If the base metal around the weld tore, the frame tube may be too thin for the load it carries. Re-welding into weakened base metal without addressing the cause will fail again. In those cases we reinforce the hinge zone with a backing plate or gusset before laying a new weld.

Most field weld repairs finish in two to four hours. That window covers joint prep, welding, spatter finishing, and the structural load test before the job is closed. Shop fabrication for replacement sections takes longer and depends on material sourcing. Timeline is confirmed during the initial site assessment.

Yes. All welding work is performed under California Contractor License #1049550. We have been doing gate welding in Los Angeles since 2014.
