Integrated, Not Bolted On

Gate Intercom Installation That Works With the System You Already Have

A properly installed gate intercom works as part of your gate, not as an add-on bolted to it.

We install wired and IP-based intercom systems integrated directly with your existing gate opener. You see and hear the visitor. You release the gate, from inside the home or from your phone across town. Every component is tested together before the crew leaves.

We've been doing this across California since 2014, holding contractor license #1049550. Whether you have a swing gate, a sliding gate, or a custom entry, we spec the right intercom for the opening, the driveway depth, and the way you actually use your gate.

The LA Reality

Why Los Angeles Properties Need This More Than Most

Long driveways, high walls, and setback entries turn a simple knock into a daily guessing game.

That's not a quick walk. We see this daily: properties with tall privacy walls and electrically automated gates that have no intercom. The gate opens from a remote, but nobody can identify who triggered the signal. For most gated properties, an intercom isn't an upgrade. It's the missing piece of the system.

Southern California's sun and dry heat also affect equipment selection. Outdoor gate stations need UV-resistant housings and camera lenses rated for direct exposure. We account for that in every spec.

Field Notes

What I Saw on a Job in the Cañada Flats Area

A wired system already existed. It just wasn't connected to anything.

I pulled up to a property in the foothills northeast of Pasadena. The homeowner had bought the place two years earlier. There was a gate station mounted at the entry, a clean panel with a call button and a camera lens. But when I checked the conduit at the post base, the low-voltage cable was capped off. It had never been run to the house.

The previous installer had mounted the gate station and left. Here's what an intercom actually needs to be a system, and what had been done.

We opened up the conduit run and extended two-wire intercom bus cable, a wiring architecture that carries both power and communication signals over a single conductor pair, from the gate station all the way to the interior junction inside the garage. Then we paired the indoor station, set up the mobile app integration, and programmed the gate release relay through the opener control board.

Final step: a full function test. I called from the gate station. The indoor unit rang. The app rang. The gate released on command from both. Then we tested camera resolution in direct afternoon sun. No washed-out frames. Clear face identification at six feet.

Two hours. The system that had been sitting dormant for two years was fully commissioned before I left the driveway.

Choosing a System

Wired or IP-Based: Here's How to Choose

Your driveway length and your network setup usually decide the right intercom type.

Wired intercom system

How it works

Low-voltage cable carries audio, video, and gate release signals through conduit from gate station to indoor receiver.

Best for

Properties with existing conduit runs, and jobs where network reliability near the gate is limited.

Gate integration

Direct relay connection to the gate opener control board.

Camera resolution

Fixed, set by hardware in the gate station.

Reliability

Extremely stable. Not dependent on Wi-Fi signal strength near the gate.

IP-based intercom

How it works

Network-connected unit transmits audio and video over your local Wi-Fi or internet connection to a smartphone or indoor panel.

Best for

Properties where the owner travels or wants remote gate access from any location.

Gate integration

Relay module or smart controller bridges the IP signal to the gate operator.

Camera resolution

Often higher, and upgradeable by swapping hardware.

Reliability

Depends on router range or a network extender at the gate post.

Both systems can be integrated with LiftMaster and most major gate operators. We recommend based on conduit routing, the path and method by which low-voltage cable is run from the gate station to the indoor unit, and your property's network coverage at the gate post.

Our Standards

Our Standards for Every Intercom Install

Every intercom we install is configured, not just connected.

  • All cable runs are pulled through conduit, with no surface-mounted wire exposed to weather or physical contact.
  • Gate station mounting height set for driver-side vehicle access, not just pedestrian use.
  • Camera angle adjusted and locked before leaving, not left at factory default.
  • Gate release relay tested from both the indoor station and the mobile app on the day of install.
  • Two-wire intercom bus systems confirmed for full signal integrity before panel covers go back on.
  • IP-based intercom systems confirmed on network with a signal strength reading at the gate post, not assumed from inside the house.
  • All conduit entry points sealed against Southern California dry-season dust and pest intrusion.
The Process

How the Installation Process Works

From first site visit to final test, here's exactly what to expect.

Site diagnostic

We assess your gate type, opener model, existing conduit, and driveway geometry. This determines whether a wired intercom system or an IP-based intercom is the right fit. We also check camera resolution options relative to your gate's setback from the street.

System specification and scheduling

We provide your equipment recommendation and schedule the installation. Most residential driveway intercom installations in Los Angeles are completed in a single visit.

Conduit routing and cable pull

The crew routes low-voltage cable through conduit from the gate station position to the indoor or garage junction point. All penetrations are sealed.

Gate station and indoor station mounting

The outdoor gate station is mounted and aligned. The indoor station is positioned and wired at the interior junction.

Gate operator integration

The intercom's release relay is wired directly into the gate opener control board. This is the step where a video intercom gate system becomes a functioning access tool, not just a doorbell.

Mobile app pairing and full system test

For IP-based systems, the mobile app is paired and tested. Then we run a full call sequence: gate station to indoor unit, gate station to mobile app, and gate release from each point. Camera resolution confirmed. Gate cycle confirmed. Job complete.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Pricing requires a site assessment. Iron Men evaluates driveway length, existing conduit, and gate operator compatibility before quoting. Wired and IP-based systems differ in equipment and labor scope. Call 844-997-7555 to schedule a site visit and get an accurate number for your property.

Yes. Iron Men wires the intercom's release relay directly into your current gate opener's control board. No opener replacement is required in most cases. The intercom becomes a trigger point within your existing automation. We confirm compatibility during the site diagnostic before any equipment is ordered.

Most residential installs complete in a single visit. The site diagnostic, conduit routing, gate station mounting, and full system commissioning typically run two to four hours. IP-based systems add mobile app pairing to that sequence. We don't leave until every call path (indoor station, mobile app, and gate release) tests clean.

Wired intercoms carry audio, video, and gate release signals through conduit, with no Wi-Fi dependency at the gate post. IP-based intercoms transmit over your network, enabling remote gate release from anywhere via smartphone. Wired systems suit properties with limited network coverage near the gate. IP-based suits owners who frequently manage access while away from home.

Camera resolution that looks sharp indoors can wash out completely in Southern California's afternoon sun. We adjust the camera angle, confirm image clarity at actual visitor distance, and lock the settings before leaving. A camera that can't identify a face at six feet in direct sun isn't doing its job, regardless of its spec sheet.

Iron Men diagnoses incomplete installations as part of the site assessment. We trace existing conduit, identify where the wiring stops, and determine what's needed to fully commission the system. In many cases, the gate station hardware is reusable. We extend the cable run, wire the indoor station, and integrate the release relay, completing what the previous installer left unfinished.
