What I Saw on a Fence Replacement in Culver City

Two identical fences. Same source, same year. One looked great, one was rusting at every seam.

I'm Yaron Eliya, and I've been running Iron Men since 2014. Two neighbors had purchased iron fences from the same source in the same year. One was holding up fine. The other had visible rust lines running down from every mechanical connection, and the powder coat was bubbling along the bottom rail. When I looked closer, the difference came down to two things.

Same street, same year, same supplierTWO VARIABLES DIFFERED · THE OUTCOMES DIVERGED
The rusting fence
Failed early
The neighbor's fence
Holding fine
PrimerA standard rust primer not rated for the salt exposure that area sees.A sealed epoxy primer underneath the powder coat.
ConnectionsMechanical, not welded. Every gap around a fastener was a point where moisture could sit against bare metal.Welded. No gaps. No exposed metal at the joints.
ResultRust lines from every connection. Powder coat bubbling along the bottom rail.No rust at the joints. Finish intact.
That's the kind of decision we make before fabrication begins. It's not an upgrade. It's a baseline.
LA Geography Matters

Los Angeles Properties Have Two Very Different Environments

Your fence lives in a different climate depending on which side of the hills you're on.

  1. The Pacific
  2. Culver City
  3. Mar Vista
  4. Mid-City

Here's what most homeowners don't realize about Los Angeles geography: the marine layer that rolls in off the Pacific doesn't stop at the beach. Salt-laden air reaches properties well inland on a regular basis.

A tubular steel fence in those zones can begin showing rust at the seams within two to three seasons if the primer wasn't chosen for that exposure level.

Our crews operate out of the Wilshire Blvd office, which puts us between the Westside and the inland valleys. We've installed iron fencing in both environments. We know which products hold and which ones don't.

Material + Installation

Iron Fence Installation Means More Than Just Setting Posts

It's a material decision as much as it is an installation decision.

The fence you choose, and the way it's coated, determines how long it looks good before maintenance becomes necessary. We specify the connection method, primer, and topcoat based on where your property sits, not on a one-size-fits-all formula.

A low-carbon iron alloy worked into shape rather than cast

Wrought iron

Denser than hollow steel, it holds primer and topcoat more evenly and carries more visual weight. It costs more but performs longer in coastal conditions.

Hollow steel sections, a cost-effective alternative

Tubular steel

Lower cost than solid wrought iron, but it requires sealed welds and a proper primer system to prevent internal moisture from building up inside the post.

An electrostatically applied dry coating cured under heat

Powder coat finish

The primary protective and decorative finish on iron and steel fences. Mil thickness and primer compatibility both matter.

Our Standards

Our Standards for Every Iron Fence Installation

Every project follows the same material and process standards, adjusted for site conditions.

  • Connection method, welded or mechanical, chosen by structural load and coastal proximity.
  • Rust primer, zinc-rich or epoxy-based, selected for location rather than applied by default.
  • Fence footing depth, the depth posts are set in concrete, sized for fence height and local wind and seismic conditions.
  • Picket spacing confirmed against applicable code before fabrication.
  • Powder coat applied over fully prepped, primed metal. No shortcuts on surface preparation.
  • All welds sealed before primer, so there is no bare metal left at the joints.
The Sequence

Our Installation Sequence, Assessment Through Final Walk

Material and coating decisions are made before anything is fabricated.

Site assessment and specification

We measure the perimeter, check grade changes, note proximity to the coast, and confirm local code for fence height and picket spacing. HOA documents are reviewed if applicable. Material selection, wrought iron or tubular steel, happens here along with connection method and primer specification.

Fabrication, setting and coating

Posts are set in concrete at the required footing depth and panels are fabricated to confirmed specs. Connections are welded or mechanical based on the assessment, and all welds are sealed before primer. Powder coat is applied after primer cures, with color confirmed first.

Testing and final walk

Every gate or access point is tested for operation. The fence line is walked for gaps, level, and plumb. Any final adjustments are made before the crew leaves the site.

Code & HOA

HOA Requirements and Picket Spacing Are Part of Our Process

We confirm code and HOA requirements before a single piece of material is cut.

Many homeowners in Los Angeles belong to an HOA with specific design guidelines covering fence height, picket spacing, and finish color. Picket spacing, the gap between vertical fence members, is also governed by local code for pool barrier applications. Getting this wrong means a fence that fails inspection or gets flagged by the association.

We confirm these requirements during the site assessment and know how to document compliance before installation begins. You won't be managing those conversations alone.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Iron fence installation costs more upfront than wood or vinyl. Material choice, wrought iron versus tubular steel, is the biggest price variable. Coastal properties add cost because sealed welds and higher-grade primer are required. Iron Men confirms your material spec and location during the site assessment before quoting. Long-term, iron outperforms most alternatives in durability and resale appeal.

Most residential iron fence installations complete in two to four days. The site assessment, material selection, and code confirmation happen first, before any fabrication begins. Footing concrete needs cure time before panels are set. Coastal properties may require additional dry time between primer and powder coat application. Complex perimeter runs or HOA approval steps can extend the timeline.

Wrought iron is a dense, solid alloy worked into shape. It is heavier, holds primer and topcoat more evenly, and performs longer in coastal conditions, but it costs more. Tubular steel uses hollow sections at a lower cost, but it requires sealed welds and the correct primer system to prevent internal moisture buildup. Both are installed by Iron Men. The right choice depends on your budget, location, and how long you want the fence to perform before maintenance is needed.

Salt-laden marine air reaches properties well inland from the beach, including Culver City, Mar Vista, and Mid-City. That salt exposure can rust an improperly primed fence at the seams within two to three seasons. We select a rust primer rated for your exposure level rather than applying a single default, and coastal jobs get sealed welded connections.

Powder coat alone is not enough protection on an iron fence near the coast. Zinc-rich or epoxy primer applied to bare metal before topcoat is the real barrier against oxidation. Without the right primer, rust starts at seams and joints within two to three seasons. Iron Men matches primer type to your property's exposure level, not one product for every job.

Mechanical connections use fastener-based joinery between panels and posts, which leaves small gaps where moisture can sit against bare metal. Welded connections, sealed before priming, eliminate those gaps. Connection method is chosen per project rather than applied the same way on every fence: coastal properties get welded, sealed connections, while inland properties may use mechanical connections where structural load allows. That decision is made during your site assessment, not after fabrication starts.

Yes, and HOA approval is handled before fabrication begins rather than after. We review your HOA documents during the site assessment and confirm picket spacing, height, and finish color requirements against local code. Picket spacing is the gap between vertical fence members and is also governed by code for pool barrier applications. We document compliance so your fence passes inspection and clears the association.
