Pool Fencing in Los Angeles, CA
A pool barrier that passes LA County inspection the first time.
Self-closing gate, latch height, and the four-inch gap rule all confirmed against CBC 3109 before fabrication begins. Not corrected in the field afterward.

What Pool Fencing in Los Angeles Actually Requires
California law is specific about pool barriers. Not general, not flexible. Specific.
California Building Code Section 3109 governs residential swimming pool barrier requirements, covering minimum fence height, maximum gap dimensions, gate hardware, and inspection. It sets the floor, not a suggestion.
Minimum, measured from finished grade. At every point along the fence line.
Every opening must block a 4-inch sphere. Every picket, every rail gap, every frame opening.
Minimum above grade, or placed on the pool side where a child can't reach it from outside.
The gate must return to a fully closed and latched position automatically after each opening.
We build to every one of those numbers before fabrication begins. Not after.
Your Pool Already Has a Fence. Does It Actually Pass?
Many existing pool fences in Los Angeles were built to older standards and now fail CBC 3109.
A homeowner buys a property, the pool has a fence, and they assume it passes. Then they pull a permit for a remodel and LA County Building and Safety flags the barrier. Three failures account for most of what we find.
Picket spacing over four inches
We regularly find spacing running 4.5 inches instead of 4. It looks fine. It fails.
At or under 4 inches, everywhere
Confirmed at every panel, not spot-checked at one.
Latch height below 54 inches
The single most common miss. A latch a child can reach from the outside is not a barrier.
54 inches above finished grade
Or mounted pool-side, out of reach from outside the fence.
No self-closing mechanism
The gate swings open and stays open. This is the failure with the most immediate consequence.
Closes and latches on its own
Every opening cycle, with no manual effort and nothing propping it.
If any of those three describe your fence, it isn't a compliance problem to deal with later. A retrofit corrects height, spacing, gate hardware, and latch placement without replacing the whole barrier in most cases.
LA's Hillside Properties Require a Different Calculation
Grade changes directly affect how pool barrier height gets measured.
In Silver Lake, Los Feliz, and other hillside neighborhoods, the finished grade around a pool is rarely flat. That matters because the 60-inch minimum is measured from finished grade at every point along the fence line, not averaged across the run.
A post that reads 60 inches at the high side can measure only 52 inches at the low side. That gap creates a code violation even though the fence looks perfectly uniform from the deck. We account for grade elevation at every measurement point and specify post lengths per location, so the barrier holds 60 inches around the entire perimeter, not just where the grade cooperates.

How a Code-Compliant Pool Fence Gets Designed From the Ground Up
I measure every pool perimeter against CBC 3109 before a single piece of material is ordered.
I've been installing pool fencing in Los Angeles since 2014, and the single most common situation I encounter is a pre-existing fence installed to an older standard. The latch is too low. The picket spacing runs 4.5 inches instead of 4. The gate swings open and stays open. A retrofit is now on the table.
What I do differently is straightforward. I run every measurement against the current CBC 3109 checklist during the site visit: height, spacing, gate hardware, latch placement. If a grade change affects the numbers, I adjust post lengths before ordering. When fabrication is done, every component arrives ready to install to spec.
No field corrections. No callback for re-inspection. That's how an LA County pool fence inspection gets cleared the first time.
Self-Closing Gate Hardware Is Non-Negotiable
Every pool gate we install leaves the job site with a tested, functioning self-closing mechanism.
Some homeowners ask whether a self-closing mechanism is required or just recommended. Under CBC 3109 it is required, full stop. The gate must return to a fully latched position on its own after every opening cycle.
We use commercial-grade spring hinges and self-latching hardware rated for outdoor and pool environments. After installation we test the gate through multiple cycles under load, and confirm latch height and pool-side placement before signing off.
When we're done, you'll know your pool gate closes and latches every time.
Our Pool Fencing Standards
Tubular steel and ornamental iron: materials that meet the four-inch gap rule, hold their dimensions over time, and resist the moisture conditions around pools.
- Picket spacing
Confirmed at or under 4 inches at every panel before installation. - Barrier height
60-inch minimum held at every grade point, with custom post lengths as needed. - Gate hardware
Self-closing hinges and self-latching mechanisms, with pool-side latch placement. - Latch height
54 inches minimum above finished grade, verified on-site. - Finish
Anti-rust treatment applied to all steel components before delivery. - Inspection readiness
Every installation documented and ready for LA County Building and Safety review.
No shortcuts on hardware. No skipped measurements. Three coats of protective finish, not one.
How an Iron Men Pool Fence Installation Works
Measurement through inspection sign-off. The goal is one inspection, one sign-off.
Perimeter diagnostics and site measurement
We walk the full pool perimeter and record grade elevations at every proposed post location. We measure existing structures that may serve as barrier walls, confirm CBC 3109 requirements against your specific site conditions, and identify any grade-related post-length adjustments.
Fabrication and material specification
Based on site data we specify tubular steel or ornamental iron panels, post lengths, and gate hardware. All components are fabricated to the confirmed dimensions, not trimmed or adjusted on-site to make up for measurement gaps.
Installation and hardware testing
Posts are set at correct depth for soil conditions common to the LA basin. Panels are installed and picket spacing verified. Gate hardware is mounted, adjusted, and tested through multiple open and close cycles, with latch height confirmed against the 54-inch minimum.
Post-installation inspection preparation
We provide documentation of the installation, materials, hardware specifications, and site measurements, to support the LA County pool fence inspection process.
