The Difference

A Perimeter Fence That Actually Controls Access

A decorative fence and a security fence are two completely different products.

Privacy fence

Standard six-foot wood panel

Controls sightlines
~2 secondsThe delay it gives anyone who wants to climb it. It looks solid from the curb. It isn't.

Almost no grip resistance. A determined person clears it in seconds.

Security fence

Spec'd perimeter system

Controls access
Time and difficultyEvery component is chosen to increase both, not just block the view.

Heavier gauge, anti-climb profile, deeper footings, deterrent topper. Get one variable wrong and the fence looks right but doesn't function right.

In Los Angeles, where commercial lots, multi-unit properties, and high-value estates sit directly on public streets, that gap matters.

The System

Topper Types, Gauge, and Height: How We Handle It

Every component is selected from your site's threat profile, not a standard product tier.

Anti-climb profile, topper selection, and material gauge work as a system. Pulling one of those decisions from a default menu without the others produces a fence that looks secure but isn't fully spec'd.

Six decisions, made in this orderEACH ONE CONSTRAINS THE NEXT
01
HeightSet first
Eight feet is the baseline for most commercial applications. Taller is available for industrial sites.
02
GaugeComes second
6-gauge and 9-gauge chain-link fabric for security, against the 11-gauge standard used in residential. Heavier fabric resists cut attempts and holds shape under load.
03
Anti-climb profileGeometry that resists grip
Tightly spaced verticals, inward-angled tops, or hostile geometry that makes the fence physically difficult to grip or scale. Specified as an ornamental iron option for high-value properties.
04
Topper typePermit-gated
Barbed wire, razor wire, or anti-climb spear finials, with permit compliance confirmed before ordering.
05
Footing depthSet from soil, not from a chart
Extended concrete footings resist both climbing uplift and impact force. Depth is set from the soil conditions at the site.
06
CCTV integrationDesigned in, not bolted on
Camera mount points built into the fence structure, not surface-mounted after the fact.
Height is chosen before gauge because it changes the load the fabric has to carry. Gauge is chosen before the topper because a topper adds uplift force. Footing depth is last on the structural list because it has to absorb everything above it.
Case Study

How Yaron Spec'd a Warehouse Perimeter on the East Side

Proper specification starts with reading the site, not reading a product catalog.

A 1.2-acre warehouse property in East Los Angeles running a five-foot chain-link fence. The owner wanted an upgrade after a series of after-hours access events. The first thing I looked at wasn't the existing fence. It was the footing condition. Shallow footings in compacted urban fill soil shift under lateral pressure. That fence wasn't just too short. It wasn't anchored properly.

A continuous perimeter that matched the property's actual exposure. No afterthought additions. No retrofit camera mounts bolted on later. That's what specification-first installation looks like.

Local Standard

Los Angeles Properties Require a Different Specification Standard

Perimeter fencing here has to account for high-traffic corridors and dense urban access points.

We dispatch from the Wilshire Boulevard office directly into commercial corridors across the city. The industrial zones along the 10 and 405 are among the most active areas we serve, and properties there face exposure from multiple access directions, not just a single street frontage.

Here's what matters about urban security fencing: the threat isn't always coming from one side. Corner lots, alley-adjacent properties, and sites near freeway on-ramps need perimeter plans that account for every vulnerable edge, not just the front gate.

Los Angeles County also has permit requirements for certain topper types. Razor wire is regulated more strictly in residential-adjacent zones than barbed wire. We handle the permit side before the first post goes in the ground.

Process

Diagnostics, Build, and Testing

Every security fence installation follows a three-phase process. No skipped steps.

1

Site diagnostics

We walk the full perimeter before any design decisions are made. We check soil conditions, identify vulnerable access points, confirm existing footing conditions, and map CCTV sight lines. LA's urban lot configurations often include alleys, shared walls, and irregular corners, all of which affect specification.

2

Build

Posts are set to specified footing depth in concrete. Fabric or panel installation follows the design plan. Toppers are installed and secured according to permit requirements. CCTV mount points are positioned and tested for angle and load capacity before cameras are handed off to the security integrator.

3

Post-installation walk

We walk the completed perimeter with the property owner or site manager. Every connection point, every post, every topper attachment gets checked. We don't leave the site until the fence performs the way the specification said it would.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Security fence pricing starts around $35-$80 per linear foot for heavy-gauge chain-link. Ornamental iron anti-climb profiles run higher, often $80-$150 per linear foot. Final cost depends on height, gauge, topper type, and footing depth. Razor wire permits and CCTV mount point integration add scope. Iron Men provides site-specific quotes after a perimeter walk, not a phone estimate based on linear footage alone.

A privacy fence controls sightlines. A security fence controls access. Standard six-foot wood panels offer almost no grip resistance and a determined person clears them in seconds. Security fencing uses heavier gauge material, anti-climb profiles with tightly spaced verticals or hostile geometry, deeper concrete footings, and deterrent toppers. Every component is chosen to increase the time and difficulty of unauthorized entry, not just block the view.

Every assessment covers the full perimeter on foot. We check soil conditions, existing footing depth, vulnerable access points, corner geometry, and CCTV sight lines. Alley exposures and irregular lot corners are mapped separately. That information drives the specification: height, gauge, topper type, and footing depth are all decided before any materials are ordered.

Security fence specification depends on site-specific variables that can't be assessed remotely. Soil type affects footing depth. Corner geometry affects topper continuity. Alley exposure affects which fence sides need heavier spec. A phone quote produces a number, not a specification. Iron Men licenses under California Contractor License #1049550 and has operated since 2014; every installation is built to match the site's actual threat profile, not a standard product tier.

Most commercial security fence installations complete in two to four days after the permit and material lead time. Site walk and specification take one visit. Post-setting requires concrete cure time before fabric or panel installation begins. Properties needing barbed wire or razor wire topper permits may add five to ten business days for permit processing.

For security applications we specify 6-gauge or 9-gauge chain-link fabric, compared to the 11 or 11.5-gauge standard used in residential fencing. The heavier gauge resists cut attempts and holds shape under load, which is critical for commercial and industrial perimeters.

Yes. Los Angeles County regulates certain topper types, and razor wire is regulated more strictly in residential-adjacent zones than barbed wire. We confirm permit compliance and handle the permit side before the first post goes in the ground.

Retrofit topper installation is possible on structurally sound existing fences. The post condition and footing depth are checked first, because a topper adds uplift force that a shallow or corroded post may not handle. If the existing posts pass inspection, barbed wire or anti-climb spear finials can be added without full fence replacement. Razor wire requires a separate permit regardless of whether the fence is new or existing.

Yes. We design structural CCTV mount points into corner posts and mid-run posts before installation begins, then test each for angle and load capacity. Cameras are handed off to your security integrator, so there are no surface-mounted retrofit brackets bolted on after the fact.

Footing depth is how deep a post is set in concrete, and it directly affects how much force the fence can absorb. Shallow footings in compacted urban fill soil can shift under lateral pressure. We set extended concrete footings based on soil conditions at your site to resist both climbing uplift and impact force.
