Even wear across both rollers
Normal service life. Both rollers have carried a fair share of the load and reached the end of their working range together. Straight roller replacement is the correct fix.

Sliding gate tracks realigned and rollers replaced to spec.
We diagnose track alignment before replacing hardware, because a roller that wears out early is usually reporting a problem somewhere else.

Grinding, scraping and straining are three different faults. The noise your gate makes points to a different part of the system.
| What you hear | Most likely cause | What we check first |
|---|---|---|
| Grinding | Roller bearing failure, or debris packed into the track channel. | Bearing condition on every roller, then the full length of the track channel for compacted debris. |
| Scraping | Track alignment. The gate is contacting something it shouldn't across part of its travel. | Track level and straightness end to end, plus the mounting points holding it in position. |
| Straining motor | Resistance in the roller path. The operator is working against friction it wasn't sized for. | Each roller spun by hand for free movement, then the operator's effort across the full travel. |
Three things cause most sliding gate track and roller failures in Los Angeles: debris accumulation in the track channel, roller bearing wear from age and load, and track alignment drift caused by ground settling or impact. The first two are visible. The third is the one most repairs miss.
When one roller is chewed up and the other looks new, the rollers aren't what failed.
Rollers on the same gate should wear at similar rates. When they don't, something upstream is loading them unevenly. Replacing hardware without correcting that puts a new roller into the same bad geometry, and it wears out on the same schedule as the last one.

Uneven wear on one roller points to a track alignment issue further down the system. Replace only the roller here and the new one wears out the same way. The track has to be corrected first.
A track pitched by even a small amount stops draining, and a track that stops draining collects everything.
A track sitting true sheds water to both sides. Nothing accumulates in the channel, so the rollers run on a clean surface for their full service life.
Los Angeles soil shifts. Add seasonal irrigation and the pitch turns the channel into a collection point. Water sits, debris packs into the low spot, and one roller starts carrying friction the other never sees.
Debris in a track channel isn't just leaves. It compacts into a hard layer that the roller has to climb, and that climb loads the bearing at an angle it was never designed for.
One roller was destroyed. The other looked almost new. That told me everything.

A homeowner in Sherman Oaks called about a sliding gate that had started grinding. He'd already had someone out who told him the rollers needed replacing. He wanted a second opinion before spending the money.
When I got there I pulled the front roller first. It was worn badly, the bearing was rough and the wheel had flat spots. Then I pulled the rear roller. It was in decent shape. Not new, but nothing like the front.
Rollers on the same gate don't wear at different rates unless something is loading them unevenly.
I ran a level along the track. The track was pitched slightly toward the house. Not enough to see standing at the driveway, but enough that water wasn't draining off it. Every time the sprinklers ran or it rained, water sat in the channel and debris packed into the low point.
The front roller was doing the work of climbing over that packed debris on every cycle. That's what killed it. Replacing both rollers and leaving the track pitched would have bought maybe a year before the same call came in again.
We shimmed the track back to level, cleared and flushed the channel, and replaced both rollers. The gate has run clean since. That's the difference between fixing a symptom and fixing a cause.
Track condition is assessed before any roller is ordered. Every time.

Diagnose the track, then the rollers, then correct in that order.
We run the gate and listen, then work the gate by hand to feel where resistance lives along the travel. A level goes on the track end to end. Every roller comes off for bearing inspection and wear comparison.
The wear pattern across rollers tells us whether we're dealing with a hardware problem or a track problem wearing the hardware out.
Track first. Debris cleared from the full channel length, alignment corrected, bent sections straightened where straightening is viable and replaced where it isn't.
Rollers second, replaced in pairs on the same carriage so the load stays balanced. Correcting the track after fitting the rollers just puts new hardware through the misalignment we came to fix.
The gate runs its full travel under operator power, repeatedly. We check for the original noise, watch roller tracking through the whole channel, and confirm the operator isn't straining at any point in the cycle before we call the job done.
